Would like to install 3.36 to pull over 7400 lbs.

Hi guys,

It has been a long time since I have been here. I have a 2005 Titan CC XE and it does NOT have the big tow package. I would like to buy a 26' travel trailer toy hauler that would exceed the 7400 lbs. load rating of my non-BT Titan. I would like to keep my truck instead of purchasing a new truck, so I would like to modify my truck to a Big Tow. I understand that I have 2.94 gearing and would like to change to 3.36 gears. I see that I can get them from various places on the web and they are manufactured by superior axles and gears. I also understand that I would need to get the speedometer recalibrated and that my cruise control will stop working. From reading in the threads I see that I can get an UpRev tuner and they can flash it for the 3.36 gears that would retain use of the cruise control... that is IF I have the ECU code for a truck similar to mine, but has the BT package. Furthermore, I do not have a transmission temperature gauge, so I would like to install one so that I can monitor the trans temps.

So I have a few questions that I hope you fine folks can help me with:

1. Can anyone point to a thread where this has been done before?
2. Does anyone have the ECU code for a 2005 Titan CC XE WITH Big Tow Package?
3. I was planning to follow this thread http://www.titanspot.com/Titan/topic/7463-a-pillar-3-gauge-pod-install/ to install gauges and gauge pods in in my truck...does anyone find anything wrong with this procedure, particularly with where the temperature sending unit is placed in the transmission?
4. Should I be considering installing a Tru-trac?
5. Should I install the PML deep transmission pan?
6. Am I missing anything?

Thanks in advance for any replies. I realize that some of the questions are subjective, but I value opinions with valid arguments. :nerd:

I think the I have been able to answer questions 3, 4 and 5 for myself. On Burtman's website, I can get a port drilled and tapped for a temp sending unit on the PML deep transmission pan. Also, it seems reasonable to get a tru-trac and install it while I am in there changing the gears. Also the PML differential cover has a port for temp sending unit. I am currently trying to find a shop that can do the install of the gears / tru-trac for me.

I guess my biggest question since I made the previous post is:

Why is my XE have a limit of 6500 when the LE is 7200 and SE is 7400 respectively? And so the Big Tow package was not an option for my truck, but other than the mirrors, bigger tires and hitch/wiring, the only difference is the gearing? So I guess my question is that if I were to be able to change from 2.94 gears to 3.36 gears, would I then be safe to be able to tow up to 9200/9400 like the LE/SE? I have already put on the "offroad" rims and tires to match.

I believe you're also missing a transmission cooler, which is easy to add. -- Edit nope cooler is in the rad and I'm pretty sure all the rads are the same so you already have it.

I see no reason why regearing would effect the speedometer or cruise control as the speed signals are taken from the tone rings at the wheel bearings....maybe I'm run about this.

Definitely due the trutrac while your in there, ad the cover for cooling. I'd be considering 3.73 gears, same cost and if you look at any other brands towing package 3.73 is the gear of choice; well Ram needs 3.92 but that's to make up for all the idiots who think they can pull anything with a Ram 1500.

What is the tongue weight? Our 29' travel trailer was unbalanced when towing, it would dip and bounce the hitch after crossing heaves in the road, so I added Timbren's SES 'rubbers' in the rear. On my truck they don't quite touch when loaded but if anything bounces they touch and settle everything down immediately.

A weight distributing hitch and brake controller are a must; of course.

Thanks for the reply Canadian Miner. Not sure about Canada, but down here, from what I understand, we have the transmission cooler - 2 actually. So I am pretty sure I am good there. I plan to install the PML deep Transmission pan as well as the PML rear differential cover, so I think it should stay cooler than another (stock) BT Titan.

So far I want to get these items:

Truetrac $650 http://www.amazon.com/Eaton-913A582-Detroit-Truetrac-Differential/dp/B001GCCGUI

3.36 Ring and Pinion Gears $320 https://ruggedrocksoffroad.com/niss...-36120.html?osCsid=2fnrit29nhpim381sr73cq25i0

install kit $160 https://ruggedrocksoffroad.com/niss...p-5680.html?osCsid=2fnrit29nhpim381sr73cq25i0

PML deep trans pan (with boss machined and tapped for temp sensor) $225+$40 http://www.yourcovers.com/transpan_11037.php

PML extra capacity differential cover (already includes temp port) $195 http://www.yourcovers.com/diffcover_10756.php

Towing Mirrors $175 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Manual-Towi...issan|Model:Titan&hash=item1e86db45f6&vxp=mtr

A-Pillar 3 gauge pod (Light Grey) $60+$8 http://www.gaugepods.com/nissan_t.html

Diff temp gauge $50 http://www.egauges.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=ATM-2636

trans temp gauge $50 http://www.egauges.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=ATM-2640

water temp gauge $50 http://www.egauges.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=ATM-2635

The total is about $1,983 without installation. I would install the pod, gauges and mirrors. I am hoping I could get the truetrac, gears and pans/sending units installed for under $500.

I have another question that I have not been able to find an answer to:

The Truetrac seems to be 32 spline, while the gears are 24 spline. It is obvious the two won't mesh, so is there an adapter or something? Can someone enlighten me about the spline numbers.

Thanks for reading!

Looks like you have it nailed down to me. Maybe ensure your u-joints and transmission mount are in good shape. If I was committed to keeping the truck a lot longer I'd be adding that Pan and re-gearing to 3.73.

What are you running for tires?

I'd also recommend scaling the truck and trailer when all is said and done to ensure you're within GVWR/GCWR Limits...really it valuable to know how much you really weigh.

My truck consistently weighs 6,000lbs-6,100lbs with me, a full tank, no spare, and a varying number of tools and recovery gear. Our 29' travel trailer is ~6,300lbs empty, add everything we bring ~7,000lbs, add a full fresh water tank ~7,330lbs; GVWR is 7,600lbs. When we picked up the trailer my exhaust manifolds were cracked and the trailer was too much for the Titan; with headers, UpRev, Timbrens and traction bars the Titan plays with the trailer.
