At the unveiling of the Nissan Titan full-size truck XD 2016 North American International Auto Show in 2015, there has actually been two launches in one - the new V8 Turbo Diesel Cummins 5.0 L is also presented first mounted in a vehicle.

The combination of Cummins turbo diesel engine and redesigned TITAN is a new segment in the North American truck market, providing a vehicle that is relatively fuel efficient while demonstrating real work performance.

The new generation of Nissan TITAN increases the presence of Cummins on the North American truck market, ranging from heavy trucks segment light trucks. The new XD engine TITAN shares more than 70% of these parts with the retail version of the family of Cummins engines ISV5.0 - which notably equip vehicles with a gross weight of 30,000 pounds. The turbo diesel V8 5,0L diesel stands out smaller and bigger truck available on the market.

"We are proud that the Nissan Titan truck XD next generation is equipped with the Cummins engine and features our logo," said Jeff Caldwell, CEO of Cummins - International Segment trucks / vans. "The truck owners have very specific needs and performance has always been top of the list, closely followed by the return due to rising fuel prices. The new TITAN XD is able alone to meet these needs, rather than be limited to a significant saving in fuel or outstanding performance. Light truck owners should not have to compromise on energy efficiency when they want to take advantage of the performance of their truck. »

Since the beginning of their partnership in 2007, Nissan and Cummins have worked together to optimize the calibration and specific parts for Cummins turbo diesel V8 5.0 L. Since then, the engine has been subjected to rigorous validation procedures , spent countless hours in low and high temperature test cell, and is being tested in very difficult conditions in more than a million miles in preparation for the production launch later in 2015.

About the V8 Turbo Diesel 5.0L Cummins
turbo diesel V8 5.0 L consists of a steel cylinder block compact graphite (CGI), a forged steel crankshaft, alloy cylinder heads high strength aluminum and composite valve covers to ensure maximum durability in a lightweight block. These features, and the double overhead cam head, also contribute to producing excellent attenuation of noise, vibration and harshness diesel turbo V8 5.0 L.

The turbocharged two-story M²MC Cummins is configured to function effectively both down at high speeds. The serial-sequential turbocharging system comprising two turbochargers of different sizes, a smaller turbo for low airflow and a big turbo allowing a high air flow. The small turbo has the advantage of providing good response time transient due to its low inertia and large turbo keeps power at higher speeds. This eliminates turbo lag problems, ensuring a constant maximum torque throughout the power range. To control the flow of air between the two turbochargers, the new M² Cummins Turbo Technologies system uses a patented rotary valve to open ports which function as bypass or discharge and the thermal management post-treatment of exhaust gas .

The high injection pressures from the most recent BoschMD power system high pressure common rail piezo injectors offer precise control of the fuel for optimum combustion in the cylinders, promoting greater energy efficiency and reduced emissions. Producing multiple injection with electronic controls integrated events, the common rail system and the two-stage turbocharger M²MC Cummins possible to develop a very impressive torque and maximum power of 555 lb-ft and 310 hp .

In cold weather, the ceramic glow plugs improved considerably reduce startup time and the inrush current, reducing the requirements of the vehicle charging system. Ceramic glow plugs are designed to last the life of the engine without requiring maintenance.

The fuel filter system of two-stage turbo diesel V8 5.0L is equipped with the latest filtration media NanoNetMC Cummins Filtration, which ensures that the common rail system is fully protected against fuel pollution. The unique design of NanoNet produces a lower fuel flow restriction and retains more than 99% of all particles of 4 microns.

The proven technology of air treatment and emission control involves the extensive expertise of Cummins on control technologies. The two-stage turbocharger M²MC Cummins, the recirculation system of the cooled exhaust gas and the post-treatment of Cummins Emission Solutions system, equipped with a diesel particulate filter and a method of selective catalytic reduction, generate practically free of emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM) while improving performance and fuel economy.

ANIMATION: Nissan TITAN XD's Cummins 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel Two-Stage Turbocharger

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – When the covers were pulled off the 2016 Nissan TITAN XD full-size pickup at the 2015 North American International Auto Show in January, it was really two debuts in one with the all-new Cummins 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel engine being shown for the first time too.

The Cummins 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel in the upcoming 2016 Nissan TITAN XD features a unique Cummins M²™ Two-Stage Turbocharger and is configured to work well at both low and high engine speeds. The series sequential turbocharging system, involving two differently sized turbochargers, effectively provides a small turbocharger for low air flow requirements and a large turbo for high air flow. The small turbo provides the advantage of good transient response due to its low inertia and the large turbo maintains power at higher engine speeds. This helps eliminates turbo lag, providing a continuous delivery of peak torque through the RPM range.

In order to control the air flow between the two turbochargers, the new M² system from Cummins Turbo Technologies uses a patented rotary valve to open ports that perform the bypass or waste-gate functionality and provide exhaust after-treatment thermal management.

"We are excited to have Cummins as a partner to launch the new TITAN XD. The Cummins 5.0L V8 is a perfect fit for our truck," said Rich Miller, chief product specialist, TITAN, Nissan North America, Inc. "The 2016 TITAN reflects the passion that both Nissan and Cummins employees have toward their heritage as truck people. We collectively know what we would want in our own truck and pulled together all of those traits into one unbeatable package that we are thrilled to finally show the world."

What's the Point?

According to the "Preview" literature XD has the same towing and payload capacity as Gen I Titans. No fuel economy specs are listed. So what's the point if no new chassis is offered that increases towing or payload?

Do you have a link to the "Preview" literature?

The quoted >2,000lbs payload, >8500lbs GVWR, and >12,000lbs towing is superior to any Gen 1 Titan. Especially if we assume this is for the models we have been shown, which are all carrying a lot of extra mass (Crew Cab, 6.5" box, 4x4, and upscale trims). Really the trucks that they are showing us should have the lowest capacities of any XD.

Figured there would be a lot of interest over this!!!! And whats the point.....well a diesel motor is the point! It's not a 2500...still a 1500 so no...capacity won't change much.

The fuel economy seems a bit low from the numbers I've seen for a diesel....but we shall see....anything with a turbo is highly tuneable!
