Some of you might remember I had posted a spotty problem with my fan/blower cutting off by itself. Others have too. When it happened I would have to turn off the fan and then turn it back on and it would work fine. I could never get it to repeat itself for the Dealer. This started happening just a couple of weeks after taking delivery in May of '05. It would only happen, as I recall, when using the A/C. Finally, the other day I was sitting in a parking lot with the A/C on and the fan quit without any imput from me. I was a couple of miles from the Dealer and I took it to them so they could observe it happening. The tech, after putting a tester on the blower control, said it was the resistor in the "Variable Blower Control Module" located under the glove box. It is a $56.95 part. Part number 27151-5Z000. It is an easy install. Just two screws and the power plug. Hope this helps you other folks who have the same issue. Time will tell if this new module will permanantly solve the problem. I will let you know if it happens again.

The fan in my Xterra recently started only working on level 4 (high). Turns out this is a common problem with the Xterra & the solution was the same as yours. A new blower resistor. It was a $25 part & took 10 minutes to replace. Location was also under the glove box. Works perfectly now.

It's been eight months now and the problem has never repeated. Looks like the new module is the permanent fix.

I'm glad you got it straightened. This will help out others with the problem.

New module has five fins. I did not think to look and count the old modules fins.
Did not think about the heat disipation either but it makes sense. Good point.

Appears that there is a new redesigned control head that will be available. Its being put on tomorrow at 10am. They say its a 45 minute job so I should have the initial results up by noon. Either way I'm going to exercise my rights here in Texas and file a lemon law complaint.

Many thanks to SHAKEDOWN! My VBCM (Variable Blower Control Module) was THE CULPRIT! I replaced it and my problem was solved =)
A lil more info regarding my specific scenario:
I have a 2005 Titan. I first noticed my problem a couple of months ago. It started one day when I had my heater on around mid-speed and I noticed that it dropped to a lower speed. I then turned it to hi and it worked just fine. A few days later, it would only work on hi and no in between. About a month later, I went to use my A/C and the problem was still there, but then it started to turn off at the hi speed too. At times I would just put it at the mid-speed mark and it wouldn't do a thing. I'd leave it there for a few minutes then it would suddenly come on at the mid speed rate.. Then it would just shut off again. Eventually, it progressively got worse. At the hi speed, it would just turn on-off-on-off, etc.
My old/bad VBCM was a 5 finner. I replaced it with the 27151-ZM70A that I bought at the local dealership for $61 bucks (couldn't wait to buy it from an online seller, too hot here in Texas). It was a 3 finner! The 5 finner had small fins that are very close together. The 3 finner has coarser fins the have larger gaps. The 2 screws holding it in place are 7/32. Took me about 5 minutes to make the swap! I'm now a happy camper!! =)

Called to get a quote from a local dealer and gave him the part number.....

"$169 and in stock"
"$169?!"
"Yup"
"Ok, thanks. I might call you back"

Called back about 10 minutes later just to make sure I gave him the right part number....

"Hi, I just called a few minutes ago and wanted to verify I gave you the right part number"
Without even letting me get the part number out "I already gave you this information, your number is right" (in a sh*tty tone)
"Thanks *******" click

Just ordered the part online from Nissan Parts Connection for $55.72 shipped. Hopefully it solves the issue.

I have been having a problem with my controller too. But my problem is the fan is on high speed constantly, won't slow down to any other speed. When I turn on the A/C it works on high and the vent selection works normally. But when I turn the control knob to the off position the fan still blows on high speed and it sounds like the air is blowing in the dash. Did that make sense? Has anyone else encountered this?
Anyway, I was wondering if this controller could be my problem as well. Any input is appreciated. Thanks

When mine first starting acting up, the only settings I had were Off & High. Then eventually it wouldn't work at all. Probably need a new VBC

My blower shuts off when I hit a hard bump. The service manager looked at me like I was crazy when I tried to describe it. I may have to give this new part a try.

Shakedown, thanks for the pictures. That gives me a better idea of where to find it.

Hi guy..question..My T a/c would sometime not blow..the a/c light would be one and the fan would cranked half way (I have the 19 setting fan switch).. but sometimes it would just shut off or when i first cranked it would just come on at random..so after reading on here I fig it was the VBC so I ordered the part and now with the new VBC installed when i have the fan on a low setting you can hear the fan blowing faster and then slower like a outside breeze. I dont know if i got the wrong VBC or if it could be something elese...any help would be great..

I am sorry but I don't know enough to suggest anything else.
But, it seems that once the blower starts to act up if you don't touch it
Or turn off the ignition then you should be able to get to the
dealer and have a tech test the vbc while it is still acting up.
That's how mine got diagnosed. Good luck.

Fan Only Works on High

My problem is the fan only works on high. I found this thread (very informative) and thought I'd give this a try.

Went to Nissan dealer parts department and asked for part #27151-5Z000 for my 2004 Titan King. They told me the part had been replaced by #27151-ZT00A and sold me the part.

This is a 4 fin part and everything went great finding and removing the old part, but there's no way this new part will fit in the slot for my truck. The screw holes are also in different spots. The old part just looks like one long single fin (or blade).

Guess I'll head back to the dealer and see what they think. Anyone have any information/ideas that may help us/them?

I also bought replacement in-cabin air filters. That went great too, up to the point that I removed the filter cover. There were no old ones there. The new ones fit nicely though. Can anyone comment on what impact running the A/C without the filters for I don't know how many years might have on the system.

Thanks!!

The XE didn't come with filters. No big deal.

I think it was only crew cabs that came with the filters for some time. I don't know exactly what the reasoning was. But I know my 04 LE OffRoad king cab didn't have the filters in it.
