i'm having issues with the 4x4 disengaging while driving. the lights stay illuminated (solid) but the front tires don't spin. when i try to re-engage it still doesn't work (4hi or 4 low). today it happened with about 12" of snow and a slick layer on the bottom. the 4x4 turned off after about a quarter mile when i heard a soft clunk. after 30 minutes of spinning i was able to get it to work for another 300 yards before similarly disengaging. the front drive shaft appears to still be in place at the transfer case and i can spin it by hand when the truck is off, on the ground and in park. i don't recall ever being able to do this before. is this normal?

is there an actuator or vacuum to engage the hubs?

thanks in advance

update...it was the driver's side axle that came out. seems to be a common problem. guess i'll figure out how to fix it soon enough.
