After a few weeks of lurking and trying to absorb all the information all you folks have provided, I decided to buy the Titan. I’m now the proud owner of a 04 SE KC 4x4. Thanks to all for providing the information!
I do have a question about getting rid of the original “break-in oil” and running some regular oil for the remainder of the break-in period. I plan on switching to synthetic as soon as I can. What suggestion do you all have?
Again, THANKS!

Hi there MikeD not to be confused with MikeZ lol. Glad to have you around. I had seen you signed in a few times and wondered when you would post. Glad you got yourself a Titan as well. I am personally about to get my first oil change and I'm going with Mobil 1 0-40 it is pure synthetic and was recomended to me by Jettech a forum member here. Quite a few members are using this. Look in the Tech Tips section for some info on oils as well as the Mods section where there are oil sample test results you can look at.

Hey M4ck,
Thanks for more helpfull info. I read some of Jettecks posts on the oil test, that is why I was wondering just how long I should leave the original oil in. I have heard that break in should be done with regular oil and then switch to syn. I've only got 200 miles on this truck so I was thinking of just changing once with the mineral base (I know that factories bid on what ever is out there) then going with the Moble 1.
Well I am no motorhead like some of these guys. I'm a computer guy. lol make sure that you get Jettech's opinion. I just do what they tell me.

Hi MikeD and welcome!!!

Concerning your oil it's not a break-in oil that comes from the factory, the best I can figure it's just cheap ole Valvoline. You can dump it anytime you want and it would be best to do it as soon as possible like say anytime from now until 1K miles.

If your a synthetic fan the Mobil 1 0W-40 has shown excellent results in oil samples I've done and if you don't like synthetics then Chevron Supreme has shown to do excellent in oil samples as well. Either way you can't go wrong Mike.

I can't stress this enough though with a new truck, please make sure to check your differential fluids as soon as possible because they typically come low on fluid from the factory...You can change those as well and Mobil 1 75W-90 makes an excellent diff. fluid for the front and rear.

Good luck and if you have any questions please let us know...

Dale

Welcome Mike D! There has been many debates over "break in" with synthetic oil. The motor builders I respect the most, (both automotive and marine) tell me that the dino oil breakin thing is all myth. You can breakin with synthetic just as well as dino oil.
Hey JetTech,
I think I’ll take your suggestion on doing an oil change immediately. I’ll go and pick up some Nissan filters today. I still don’t know which way to go as far as synthetic vs dino for this oil change. We have two different companies that build our engines for race car and both have different opinions. I do know that the oil testing works! About 20 years ago, one of the oil companies offered free oil testing and following there recommendations more than doubled the life of a fleet of Ford vans. I’m sure the technology and improved greatly since then (as has the price of testing, LOL).

By the way, you have very good taste in dynos, Author is a real joy to work with. He’s very conscientious and accommodating. Let me know when your heading down there, I’d like to see what your doing with your truck.
Thanks for the Welcome,
Mike

Wellll, I kind of don't have the same truck anymore. I traded my LE in for an SE 4x4 last Saturday so I'm in the "break-in" mode myself too. I'm not so sure I'm going to run right out and put another loud *** exhaust on this one, I'm kind of enjoying the quietness for now!!

As far as mods on my last truck it was nothing more than a Volant CAI intake, straight pipes that replaced the resonators, and a single in dual out flowmaster muffler. It was all stock aside from those little changes.

I want to make sure my truck is broken in well then I'll probably head to the dyno. FOOT TO THE FLOOR Break-in is my trick...

Also last night I changed both the front and rear diff oils and guess what???? They were both REALLY low, like that should surprise anyone  ......C'mon Nissan, get with the program and hire a new diff. oil filler person.

I know what you mean about enjoying a quiet exhaust. I have a RX 7 as a toy car and while it’s fun, the open system does get to you after a while. I don’t think anyone has beat Wankel in coming up with a better way of turning gasoline into noise. I know my wife would rather I do all the mods on the 7, but the Volant looks interesting!
