After months of searching for an exhaust specialist that makes custom "mandrel bend" systems, I settled with a company, www.mufflex-performance.com 40 miles north of me.

I will provide 2 Ractive straight flow mufflers, a Ractive X-pipe and 2 Ractive tips, all are 304 polished stainless steel. The exhaust shop will provide 304 mandrel bend stainless steel and put the entire system together with the exhaust tips coming out in front of the rear tire (ala Ford-lightning style and please don't crucify me for the Ford reference).

I was happy with my previous 2.25 inch dual set up but I'm just raising up the ante few notches to the 2.5 inch Mandrel bent in polished SS. I hope to get more low end torque and top end HP. I'll keep this forum updated with photos and product review.

You can see my present set up at www.usantonio.com/titan4x4link.htm and click on the exhaust links.
New link update 3/20/05: www.usantonio.com/100_3725.MOV Not recommended for dial-up connection.

Man, I can't wait to hear your reports/progress. Do us a favor, and get dyno'd prior to installation (if possible). THat way, we can compare the numbers somewhat.

I think you are the first one I know of to try a dual setup with the exit in front of the rear tire. I definitely am looking forward to your usual good pictorial documentation on this install. Space will be especially tight with your exit location. I want my exhaust there, but it just isn't family friendly for me.

BTW... How much for the mandrel bends? I need to find a shop around Houston and would like to have some numbers to compare if I can.

Firecracker,
Man I wish I could dyno this beast before and after the install. There are no dyno shops close to me and I am just depending on the "butt dyno" results. It's really quite frustrating to put all this time and money and not have a "black & white" records of the MODs I'm doing.

HavockWK, I had to shorten (cut) the right step bar so rear terminates where the bed starts. Since I wanted to use 304 SS (rust free) pipes, I will end up behind by 600 big ones. I had the option of using the 409 (?) SS and would have only cost me 350 but will still rust due to road salt. This is the same "rusty" stainless steel that all aftermarket exhaust systems use (cheaper for production costs). For a few hundred dollars more, I thought it was well worth the upgrade to 304. The size (2.5 vs OEM 2.25) also bumped up the cost a few dollars.

I have seen and heard other exhaust enthusiasts spend close to 8 hundred for their 409 SS exhaust systems (parts+install) and notice the pipes start to rust after a few months.

I am just taking a different approach to the same performance goal in a less expensive way while walking away with a better quality system.

The only downside that I anticipate for now, is a repair situation. If I ever needed my system fixed for any reason, eg. accident (God forbid) there are no direct replacement parts available and one has to be custom made again OR switch back to OEM exhaust.

I'll keep you guys updated.

1 week review of custom true dual

"Butt Dyno" : Improved low end torque. Massive torque gained that I am experiencing "clunks" with axle wrap. Got to get that $22 JT helper spring solution!!!

No Drone at any given RPM. Just deep mellow rumble and barks when stepped on. I'm getting nervous about adding the Volant CAI I just ordered. Check my link below my SIG and click on the "Ractive 1 & 2" links to see install photos.

Dual tips exit in front of the rear tire ala F-150 lightning.

If Volant will add hypothetical advertised 40 ft/lbs and a free flowing exhaust adds 10% improvement of 30 ft/lbs more, WOW!! This torque is over 440 ft/lbs in a Titan!!! (wishfull thinking?)

Exellent site! Can this same type of setup be brought out both sides with the dual tips? And what kind of mufflers are those huge things? Are they loud/throaty? I really like the workmanship your shop gave you, but the ride from Phx is a tad bit far....ha. Hey, I really like the look.

Also, what is with all of the silver foil work on the Volant (air box). Is that what is called a cold air intake and if so, please explain what it does, and how it does it. I am not sure what is meant when I read about the intake spacer...I am very interested in cold air intake if that is really what is happening...summer in Phx really robs engine life/efficiency. Thanks for any help you can give...

Phoenix?
I would suggest an Additional Radiator! LOL
I Believe the Foil is HVAC Tape. It is used to seal duct seams. But, there are two different types, Regular Foil, and Insulated Foil tapes (he used the insulated)
I don't know if you can get it at Home Creepo? (Depot)
The CAI, allows More air to the motor, but draws the air from the fender, and not from the engine compartment (hot air). You can just as easily use a "drop-in" Freeflow (K&N) filter, and insulate the Stock airbox.
Short of an external A/C unit, there won't be much difference (Air Temp) in Phoenix?!

You could "Fabricate" a mister to "fog" the Radiator with water, for those really hot days? (sort of like a Cooling tower)
(Can you tell I'm a HVAC Tech?)LOL!

Good Luck

Sorry to "Jack" the Thread.

I like that X-pipe!
But it LOOKS like its Restrictive by 'Crossing' the two exhaust paths?
The center of x-pipe actually is more than 2x the diameter of the two 2.5 pipes. Enclosed are pics of x-pipe before the install. Really balances pressure between the two exhaust sides.

Mills,

I thought of making the single exhaust exit both sides joined by an H-pipe but the gas tank on the left presents some dangerous combination so I opted for duals going to the right

Tattoomee stole my thunder. LOL. Yes the silver foil is HVAC insulation, self adhesive foil and it is 12 inches wide. My theory for this is to prevent the engine compartment heat transfering into the box, hopefully keeping the air intake cool, unaffected by other exterior heat factors.. Maybe a minimal return but if your Titan is sitting in the burning Arizona sun, It may help insulate the air box a little bit. More like an "ice-box" out at the beach picture. (keeps the beer cold all day! LOL)

Check the sound/video clips of my "Ractive" exhaust in one of my previous posts above.

Enough already! I am feeling guilty LOL!!

Anyway, I am waiting for TT member SmokeTitan to host an "inside the cabin sound clip" for you guys to hear. He's been doing the hosting and really appreciate his help. As soon as it's available, I'll update this thread. So far, I am very happy with this system, No annoying inside the cabin drone at any given RPM and feels to have massive throttle response improvement in conjunction with the 2nd generation Volant CAI.

You do know all you have to do is upload the mp3 here as an attachment just like uploading a picture. It works great and its the reason I set it up like that to hear peoples exhausts and other sound clips.
try it out and you wont have to worry about hosting it because our site will be doing it.
