Why is it said that only Nissan Matic fluid can go into a Titan transmission? I'm about to do a spill and fill on the transmission and I was wondering if I could use Amsoil. I realize that mixing the fresh Amsoil with the old Nissan Matic fluid may not be the greatest idea.

So i'm basically wondering that the only reason that is said is because it's not good to mix other oils with it. Please someone help me out.

Also, I have a 2004 titan, if I can't use Amsoil, which Nissan Matic fluid is spec?

Nissan Matic J is recommended. I use Moblie 1 Full synthetic as I can find it easier. There are other brands that some use, but it has to be full synthetic.

btw, I do not think Amsoil makes a comparable ATF. Someone posted about it on TT a while back.

My transmission hasn't complained about the AMSoil synthetic ATF. AMSoil lists thier ATF as compatible with Nissan Matic J. There are a number of guys using AMSoil in their transmissions. I haven't heard any complaints.

Mixing existing Matic J with AMSoil is OK. The only issue is that you don't get the full benefits of having 100% AMSoil in there. At least that's what AMSoil says.

Correct, Amsoil synthetic ATF is compatible. It works great, I have been running it for almost 50 K miles.

Dang! That's a long time. You must have been one of the first to do that.

I believe Nissan uses Matic S now instead of Matic J. I know when my IPT VB went it, I paid for the new Matic S fluid. I also bought an extra bottle for my tranny oil cooler. Works great so far. From the way other members talk, I may be switching to AMSoil ATF later on down the road...

((I posted this in another forum))

question: Is Matic S compatible with Amsoil ATF?

answer: According to Ashley (who asked Nick, the specialist at Amsoil,) "If you have Amsoil ATF, it's okay to top it off with Matic S."

"However, we don't recommend an extended drain interval."

In other words, go ahead and top it off with Matic S but dont' leave it in there! Change it out to pure Amsoil ATF or Matic S as soon as you can.

I wanted to let her know that her answer wasn't reassuring. But oh well... there's nothing she could do about it and all I should do is the right thing. Either use Matic S. Or use Amsoil.

According to my tech at Nissan, they can no longer sell you Matic J even if they have it. So I can't even order Matic J even though it's compatible with Amsoil ATF.

I have not heard a good answer to the O.P.'s question in the 8 years of Titan ownership. Why Nissan specifies matic J or S fluid is beyond me, being the tranny is not even made by Nissan or made for Nissan exclusively . Kia also uses the same JATCO tranny in the Sorento. Needless to say I have only used Matic S fluid to do a 12 qt change at 65,000 miles and a 4 qt change at 110,000 miles. Lab analysis of the used fluid was excellent both times and showed the fluid was not in need of a change for a long time. I also remember reading info from Jatco that stated if your tranny was used under normal (non towing) conditions, a change is never needed. I tow about 25% of the time.

I use Amsoil for all of my fluids. Completely compatible. Nissan says this to scare you into buying their products. Just us the Amsoil Multi Vehicle Synthetic ATF. If you go to the Amsoil Site and input your vehicle info a list with all of recommended fluids will come up. It is very helpful. The rear diff fluid is very opinionated. I just stick with what Nissan recommends 75w-140. In case you were doing that next. It is a very good product. Though pricey but totally worth it.

Besides answering from the service manual, can anyone tell me if there is an equivalent tranny oil for 2012 Nissan Titan? I know Nissan wants to suck on my wallet for there Matic S oil that they recommend but deep down I know that there is an oil equivalent out there. Has anyone used a different Oil? Thank you in advance.

Amsoil and some other full synthetic ATFs work fine.
