I had the ECM relay start acting up at about 91,000 miles (in 2007). I figured it out on the side of the road with no tools the second day that it acted up - I swapped it with another relay to get to the dealer, then purchased 2 new relays - 1 for a spare. Haven't had an issue since (truck has 189,760 miles on it now). I just got the recall notice in the mail and Nissan is going to reimburse me for both relays, as well as replace the relay under warranty (which is not necessary as far as I'm concerned).

My symptoms were: runs poorly/stalls, gauges acting up, lights on dash flickering, cranks but won't start, and it was intermittent - I could cycle the key and re-try, and sometimes it would fire up and run fine, other times it would display some or all of the symptoms.

I give Nissan credit for taking care of me as a customer. I'm 100% confident that if I would have purchased a domestic truck, I would have had more problems with it that I've had with my Titan. Now if only Nissan would build a HD Titan with a diesel...........of course, keep the body styling of the Titan as-is - no need to change it 'cause it looks great!

I had the recall taken care of and my truck still doesn't start...off and on of course. Right now it has been sitting in my driveway for two weeks and I am just sick of looking at it. Any other ideas? May I have to have the entire IDPM replaced? Spendy?

the original fix was to replace the entire IDPM. but they were always hard to find or on back order. and expensive. so the recall is just for the relay only and not the board? and why did the dealer let it off the lot if the problem wasn't fixed?

In BBF first post, it said to just change out the IPDM, costs about $100 and takes 5 min to fix. Try that, then if it still has problems, send it back to the dealer.

Recall on 10/28/2010

I went and done this recall and now my truck is worse then it was before what should i do please help.

Recall Date:
OCT 28, 2010
Model Affected:
2005 Nissan Titan
Summary:
NISSAN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2006 ARMADA, TITAN, INFINITI QX56 AND MODEL YEAR 2005-2006 FRONTIER, PATHFINDER AND XTERRA VEHICLES. THE INTELLIGENT POWER DISTRIBUTION MODULE (IPDM) ASSEMBLY CONTAINS AN ENGINE CONTROL MODULE (ECM) RELAY THAT HAS A DIODE FOR ELECTRICAL CURRENT NOISE REDUCTION. THE ECM RELAY MAY ALLOW SILICON VAPOR TO FORM AND, OVER TIME, THE SILICON EVAPORATES FROM THE DIODE MOLDING WHICH CAUSES SILICON OXIDE TO DEVELOP ON THE ECM RELAY CONTACT DUE TO ARCING.
Consequences:
THIS COULD CAUSE ENGINE STALLING INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.
Remedy:
DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE ECM RELAY INSIDE THE IPDM ASSEMBLY. THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON DECEMBER 6, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.
Potential Units Affected:

well when we got about 10 miles down the road on the way home it was stalling out and would barely move had to get some one to tow me the rest of the way home i called nissan in baytown and explained that the truck will not start they wanted me to bring it back up there but it is unable to drive and its a long way to tow it up there was hopeing maybe some one had some advice for me

first i've heard of things getting worse AFTER the repair. i hope someone can chime in.

so i guess no one is having this problem i call the dealer and get the run around this is my last nissan i should of never switched from chevy never had this problem with them and they always take care of there coustmers **** toyota does a better job then nissan does with their fixes at least the dont tell u to drive it back up there when it CANT DRIVE so AGAIN I TELL YOU DONT GO NISSAN.

sounds like you are having a crappy dealership experience and are taking out on the brand. it happens. your entire IDPM may have went bad. don't know why it would do it now, after the relay swap. but its a common problem that's finally getting fix by nissan for FREE. try switching the ecm relay with the fog light relay like the original post suggest. IF it fires up, drive it straight to the dealer in a fit of rage and give them hell. good luck.
here is another pic of it. but the original post is better, and more detailed.

As far as I know, a bad IPDM can lead to unburnt fuel passing through the exhaust, which can burn out your primary cats very quickly. This is what happened to me a few months ago. I was stranded out of town, so had to take it in the rear from a stealership ($230 for IPDM plus $60 install and PROGRAMMING)
When the primary cats go bad, the engine can go into limp mode to protect the motor from sucking the ceramic debris up from the cats through the e manifolds.
If your truck is sputtering and won't go over 35 to 50 mph, it might be in protect mode. I would think that the ECU would throw a code in this instance, though.

only code r my o2 sensors left and right bank

I just did the recall 2 days ago a the dealership , and they forgot to put back the IPDM cover . Yesterday it was a wet day. I think water came into de IPMD box and now my truck don't want to start . I ear alot of relay sounds and guages. Now the dealer is close for the week-end and im very upset. Do somebody know what can i do for the week-end ? i want to remove some relays and fuses to clean everything with contact cleaner and let everything dry but i dont have the cover and i don't know witch relay and fuse are for...
Sorry for my bad english i hope im understandeable ...

I unplugged the battery cause something is always on and it drain my battery slowly . And i ear a relay under the steering wheel cliking very fast non stop. sometime i try to start the truck and erverything is mixed up , i turn the key to start and i ear big sound in the sound system speakers but the stereo is off. the wiper start moving but they are off . all the gauges are on , off , on , off ... and i ear a bunch of relay all clicking fast everywhere.
Soon as i plug back the battery , i can smell something is burning !!!
Do im suppose to have a big main relay giving the power to everything ?? Cause if all the relay are brake like that it could be a very bad problem ??

I just sended the truck to the dealer by towing .... Ill call there tomorrow morning , i hope they will fix erverything for free and ill not have to fight my point. They did a mistake by forgotten the protective cover.... will see

Titan

truck die while driving and cannot restart
rough idle with low rpm
had to tow truck home
thought it was the fuel pump
after reading your post
I swapped ECM relay with Fog lamp relay
vrooom the truck started.
thanks you save me a bunch of money.
:thumbsup-big:
As of late I have seen a lot of posts of truck not starting, sputtering or shutting off while driving. Most of these are usually because of the ECU relay failing or in some cases the whole IPDM board failing.
IPDM = Intelligence Power Distribution Module

Symptoms - there have been lots of different symptoms but all in all the truck usually will not idle right or can't even be started.

-truck die while driving and can't be started
-sputtering like it's not getting gas
-rough idling
-usually no SES codes but might have a combination of other lights flashing or on.
-sometimes truck will die but will start up normally in a few minutes/hours than die again
-sometimes the truck crank but will not start than start normally after that (early sign of IPDM failure)
-battery usually good cause I had full lights in the truck and all other stuffs work
-I will add more to the symptoms list as I come across them

NascarJody was the first to post about swapping the ECU relay with the fog lights relay.
Note: this is a way to get you going and is not a permanent fix.
See image below

Location of IPDM box under the hood and how to remove
(you do not need to remove the IPDM out of the box but will need
to lift it up to access the lower row of relays)

Once you have swapped the relays and if the truck start right up, than you
know the ECU relay was the culprit.

FIX- couple of choices.
-Get a new ECU relay (as I say before swapping relay is not a permanent fix as the fog lights relay lacked a "protective diode", this protect the ECU from a power spike.
-Thanks to TitanBlue for finding the source of the correct relays but since it's only sold in lots of 50
-Thank you to RobKar for ordering and sending out the relays to those needed.
Relay model number: ACM33211
>>>Get ECU relays from RobKar<<<
Even those of you who have never had this problems, It would not be a bad idea to get an extra relay to keep in the truck.
Even with a new IPDM board I have some extra relays in the glove box.

-Get a new IPDM
-If you would rather get a new IPDM instead of just a relay, the part # for the new improved IPDM is 284B6-ZC00A
-I have read instance where swapping the relays did not help but the problems was solved once a new IPDM was installed.
-New IPDM cost about $100 or so, Swapping out the IPDM took me about 5 minutes in the driveway with a simple flathead screwdriver

My 05 Titan had all these symptoms, found this thread. Called my Dealer Exton Nissan in Exton PA, they took me in right away (Once I got the darn thing started). Within 1/2hr they replaced the relay under the recall notice and I was back on the road without a single issue. This forum ROCKS!!!!:thumbsup-big:

Just wanted to thank you for posting this. My truck broke down on the freeway today. I had it towed home and was thinking the worst. I did some searching and came across your post. The discription was exactly what my truck was doing. I switched the relays and my truck started right up. I called the dealer and there is a recall out for the ecu relay switches. Brought it in they fixed everything no charge. Again thank you.
